Look at total cost, not only the payment

A lower payment may simply mean a longer term. Compare interest, fees, and repayment time.

Keep a cash buffer

Debt reduction matters, but having no emergency reserve can send the next surprise back onto credit.

Make expensive debt visible

List balance, rate, monthly payment, and any prepayment penalties for every debt.

Borrowing capacity is not income

A larger credit line does not create sustainable cash flow.
