Beginner principle: Understand the mechanics and risks before buying. Knowing orders, settlement, and costs matters more than finding a hot tip.

A limit order specifies your price

A limit order can execute only at your limit or a better price, making it useful when price control matters.

A market order does not guarantee a fixed price

A market order prioritizes execution rather than a particular price, so fast markets and wide spreads require caution.

ROD, IOC, and FOK define order duration

ROD remains valid for the day; IOC executes immediately where possible and cancels the rest; FOK requires full immediate execution or cancels the entire order.

Not every order type is accepted at the open and close

The opening and closing auction periods generally accept limit ROD orders rather than market, IOC, or FOK orders.
