Investment-Linked Distributions May Come from Principal

Some linked investments can distribute cash from principal. Receiving a distribution does not automatically mean the policy generated a positive total return.

How to read this: Investment-linked policies combine an insurance contract with investment risk. Review protection needs, charges, account value, and linked investments separately.

Cash received is not automatically profit

If a distribution includes return of principal, part of the account is simply being paid back in cash rather than creating new wealth.

Compare distributions with account value

A high distribution rate combined with a declining account value may not produce a strong total return.

Read the warnings

Taiwan’s regulator specifically warns that some investment-linked distributions can come from principal and that policyholders should review the relevant disclosures.

Think in total return

A fuller view considers ending account value plus cash received, compared with money contributed, while also accounting for insurance and policy charges.

Practical pre-purchase checklist

  • Do I genuinely need the life or annuity protection provided by this contract?
  • Can I explain all major charges and deductions in my own words?
  • Can I tolerate the account loss and cash-flow stress in a downside scenario?
  • What happens if I exit early, withdraw, or need to contribute additional money?
