Private insurance and public LTC are different

Taiwan's public LTC system can provide home care, day care, transport, assistive devices, home modifications and respite after an assessment. Private LTC insurance pays according to the policy's contractual definition.

How is a long-term care state defined?

Taiwan's model policy wording uses physical functional impairment or cognitive impairment. Physical function is commonly assessed through activities of daily living (ADLs). A diagnosis alone does not automatically trigger a claim.

Common benefit structures

  • Lump sum for setup, equipment or home modification.
  • Periodic benefit for long-duration care costs.

Start with the funding gap

Estimate care cost, family capacity, public support, existing insurance and available assets before deciding whether more protection is needed.
